Overview
Rintaro Okabe is the protagonist of Steins;Gate, the 2011 White Fox series adapted from the 5pb. and Nitroplus visual novel. A self-styled mad scientist who calls himself Hououin Kyouma, he runs the Future Gadget Laboratory in Akihabara with his friends Mayuri Shiina and Itaru Hashida.
The lab accidentally creates a device that sends text messages to the past, and Okabe's ability, Reading Steiner, lets him retain memories across altered timelines. When the changes lead to Mayuri's death, he is forced to undo every D-mail, including those that made his friends happy.
Okabe's transformation from a blustering poser into a man who carries the weight of countless timelines is regarded as one of anime's best character arcs. He is voiced by Mamoru Miyano in Japanese and J. Michael Tatum in English.
