What is manhwa?
Manhwa refers to Korean comics and graphic novels. Unlike Japanese manga, manhwa is read left-to-right like Western comics. Modern manhwa is predominantly published digitally as webtoons, featuring vibrant colors and vertical scrolling. The genre has gained international recognition through hit series like Solo Leveling and Tower of God, many of which have received anime adaptations. This page lists the 12 manhwa titles our catalogue rates highest, led by Berserk (1989), JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken: Steel Ball Run (2004) and Vagabond (1998). Their first publication years run from 1989 to 2021. What sets the format apart: read left-to-right (western style), full-color digital artwork, strong action and fantasy themes, character leveling/progression systems and often adapted into anime. 7 of the manhwa series we track have an anime adaptation you can watch here, including Solo Leveling, Tower of God and The God of High School.
