Ryuk
リューク
Ryuk is the Shinigami who dropped the Death Note in the human world out of boredom, starting the entire series.
Overview
Ryuk is the Shinigami who sets the events of Death Note in motion by deliberately dropping his notebook into the human world out of boredom. Attached to Light Yagami as the notebook's owner, he follows him through the entire series as an amused spectator, refusing to take sides.
Only visible to those who touch the Death Note, Ryuk is a gangly, grinning death god with a passionate love of apples, which he suffers withdrawal without. He explains the notebook's rules and warns Light from the beginning that when the time comes, he will be the one to write Light's name.
His neutrality and morbid humour make him the series' Greek chorus, and his final scene is one of the most famous endings in anime. He is voiced by Nakamura Shidou in Japanese and Brian Drummond in English.
