Overview
Tohru Honda is the protagonist of Fruits Basket, Natsuki Takaya's shojo manga adapted in 2001 and again in a complete three-season version by TMS Entertainment from 2019. Orphaned after her mother Kyoko's death, she is living in a tent when she is taken in by the Sohma family and discovers their curse.
Twelve Sohmas transform into animals of the Chinese zodiac when hugged by the opposite sex. Tohru's boundless kindness gradually reaches each of them, especially the outcast cat Kyo Sohma and the withdrawn Yuki Sohma, and she ultimately confronts the family head Akito to break the curse.
Tohru is often cited as a model of empathetic, quietly strong heroines in shojo anime. She is voiced by Manaka Iwami in Japanese and Laura Bailey in English in the 2019 series.
