Overview
Shoya Ishida is the protagonist of A Silent Voice. As a bored elementary school student he leads the bullying of his deaf classmate Shoko Nishimiya, and when the school takes action he is singled out as the sole culprit and becomes an outcast himself.
By high school Shoya is withdrawn and suicidal, seeing crosses over the faces of the people around him. He learns sign language and seeks out Shoko to make amends, and the film follows his attempts to rebuild friendships with people such as Tomohiro Nagatsuka while confronting what he did.
Shoya's redemption story, and the way it refuses easy forgiveness, is the reason A Silent Voice is regarded as one of the most affecting anime films of its decade. He is voiced by Miyu Irino in Japanese and Robbie Daymond in English.
