Overview
Shoko Nishimiya is the deaf heroine of A Silent Voice, the 2016 Kyoto Animation film directed by Naoko Yamada, based on Yoshitoki Oima's manga. As a transfer student in elementary school she is bullied by Shoya Ishida and ostracized by their classmates, eventually leaving the school.
Years later, Shoya, now isolated himself, learns sign language to apologize to her. Shoko is gentle and quick to blame herself, and her struggle with self-worth becomes as central to the film as Shoya's guilt, especially in the scenes involving her sister Yuzuru and the fireworks festival.
The film's honest portrayal of disability, bullying and depression made Shoko one of the most discussed characters in anime film. She is voiced by Saori Hayami in Japanese and Lexi Cowden in English.
