Overview
Chise Hatori is the protagonist of The Ancient Magus' Bride, Kore Yamazaki's manga adapted by Wit Studio in 2017 and later by Studio Kafka. A Japanese teenager abandoned by her family, she sells herself at a magical auction and is bought by Elias Ainsworth, a mage with a skull for a head, who makes her his apprentice and future bride.
Chise is a Sleigh Beggy, a rare being who generates vast quantities of magic but is fated to a short life. Under Elias' care in rural England she learns magic, befriends fae and spirits such as Ruth, and acquires a dragon's curse that further complicates her lifespan.
The series is admired for her gradual recovery of self-worth rather than for action, and her relationship with Elias is one of the more unusual romances in fantasy anime. She is voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki in Japanese and Dani Chambers in English.
