Violet Evergarden
ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン
Violet Evergarden is a former soldier who becomes an Auto Memory Doll, writing letters for others while learning about human emotions.
Overview
Violet Evergarden is the title character of Kyoto Animation's 2018 series based on Kana Akatsuki's light novels. Raised as a child soldier with no name of her own, she loses both arms in the final battle of a great war and is left with mechanical prosthetics and the last words of her commanding officer, Major Gilbert Bougainvillea: "I love you."
Unable to understand those words, Violet becomes an Auto Memory Doll, a ghostwriter who composes letters for clients. Each episode follows her helping people express feelings while she slowly learns emotion herself, in stories widely praised for their animation and restraint.
Her journey continues in the films Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll and Violet Evergarden: The Movie, which resolve her search for Gilbert. She is voiced by Yui Ishikawa in Japanese and Erika Harlacher in English.
