Overview
Ken Kaneki is the protagonist of Tokyo Ghoul. A shy literature student, he is nearly killed on a date with the ghoul Rize Kamishiro and receives her organs in a transplant, turning him into a one-eyed half-ghoul caught between the human world and the flesh-eating ghouls hidden in Tokyo.
Taken in by the cafe Anteiku, Kaneki struggles with his hunger and his identity until his capture and torture by Yamori, after which his hair turns white and he embraces his ghoul side to protect his friends. In the sequel Tokyo Ghoul:re he lives as the amnesiac CCG investigator Haise Sasaki before recovering his memories.
His mask, his finger-cracking habit and the image of him counting down from a thousand made him one of the defining dark-fantasy protagonists of the 2010s. He is voiced by Natsuki Hanae in Japanese and Austin Tindle in English.
